Fitzroy Street runs from the city end down to the water and is where you go for dinner and a drink. Acland Street runs behind the beach and is cafes, bakeries and boutiques, including Monarch Cakes, which has been selling Eastern European pastry on that strip for decades. Between the two, plus Carlisle Street, you can cover groceries, a gym and late food without owning a car.
Luna Park has been at the end of Acland Street since 1912, the Palais next door still runs major shows, and the Esplanade market has been trading on Sundays since the seventies. The St Kilda Festival takes over the foreshore every February. If you have just arrived in Melbourne and want a suburb that introduces itself, this is it.

The 96 light rail is the fast one: roughly 20 minutes into the city and very frequent, day and night. The 16 runs along Fitzroy Street, Carlisle Street and the Esplanade, the 12 covers St Kilda West, and the 3 and 67 run through the eastern streets. Balaclava station on the Sandringham line is a short walk or ride from most of the suburb. Melbourne Airport is around 30 minutes outside peak.

It has a lively reputation, and it is generally safe, particularly around the beach and the main dining strips. The same awareness you would use in any busy inner-city area applies late at night around Fitzroy Street. The residential streets away from the strips are very quiet.

Yes. Little penguins roost under the breakwater at the end of St Kilda Pier, and dusk is the time to see them. It is free, it is a five minute walk from the beach, and it is a genuine Melbourne highlight.
